Due to ‘conversion’ of psychic conflict into a loss or distortion of neurologic function, manifesting as loss of function of limbs, gait disturbance, aphonia, sensory loss, pseudo-seizures, coma, blindness etc.
Prognosis
Ranges from spontaneous improvement n cases with amnesia, figure and depersonalization to acute and chronic morbidity in others.
Treatment
If the convulsions are not typical (tonic – clonic Unconscious), Ask whether the patient has ever hurt himself/ herself. If there is never a injury or tongue bite, suspect Hysterical convulsions. Other features more dramatic and only in presence of people. Inj. Largacticl 50mg. bd IM stat (Anti psychotic) Tab. Largactil 50 mg. bd or tds x 15 days. Consult a psychiatrist.
All causes of convulsion must be ruled out before labeling a patient as Hysterical.
Inj. Largacil 3-4cc IM (Chlorpromazine) Tab. Largactil 25-50mg tds.
